I was one of those kids that reached college without much of an idea how money worked. I got my first credit card by filling out an application on campus because they were offering a free pizza. These days I see more people willing to discuss what kinds of underwear Victoria’s Secret shouldn’t be selling to preteen girls than what kinds of financial products young men and women should avoid. Sex is a more acceptable topic for casual conversation than money. Accept this challenge: Talk to one person this week about money.
- This is a tough one for me. As a Christian, I know that Romans 13 tells me to yield to government authority, because God is ultimately in control, and he’s allowed men to rule. At the same time, I believe firmly in our rights as human beings when we interact with those authorities and in the wisdom of questioning and even acting out against those authorities when they are clearly in the wrong. When I hear stories like that of the fugitive slave John Price, and the Oberlin-Wellington Rescue that saved him, I understand why someone like J.D. Tucille would teach his children to break the law. I think, as Christians, we need to be aware of concepts like jury nullification, and be ready to speak out against the misconduct of those who have authority. After all, sometimes it’s what’s required to do justly and love mercy.
